Throughout the history of modern life, higher learning institutions have been playing major roles in developing and nurturing the civil society. They have become, not only as the center for knowledge transfer, but also as that for character building. Many graduates have been produced and they have been playing a major role in the society, at the local and state level as well. In spite of their success in producing qualified graduates, the institutions also bear shameful facts, which are still stifling the chest, that graduate students, in their search for self fulfillment and social existence, are found indulging in disgraced activities.
Similar dissatisfaction is also obvious at the local (Aceh), national (Indonesia) and Asian Regional level, whereby many members of decision makers are university graduates, but the output of development program has not shown an encouraging achievement. The perpetuation of underdevelopment has contributed to unstable social condition. Social riot, ethnic conflict and public vandalism are reported daily at the front page of every local or electronic media; and these conditions make difficult for civil society to take a shape. These are the evidences of deviation of our educational direction from its ideal mission that is to produce a generation as a catalyst for developing a civil society, where people can live in peace, harmony and mutual respect. Upon this reflection, certainly, Islamic higher learning institution should be in the frontline in producing a generation with noble character and academic Excellence. In embracing this noble cause, it is indispensible to review the contribution and redirect the role of the Islamic higher learning institution in building a better civil society.
